Tech executives are increasingly finding that the public does not share Silicon Valley's unreserved excitement for artificial intelligence. In an appearance on the Colin and Samir podcast, Instagram head Adam Mosseri acknowledged that widespread resentment toward AI tools is real, pervasive, and likely to intensify in the coming years.

The conversation turned to the subject after Mosseri was asked about recent hostility directed at technology leaders, including incidents where graduating college students booed visiting tech executives. Mosseri noted that resistance to generative technology extends well beyond young graduates or visual artists, reflecting a broader cultural unease.

According to reporting from The Verge, Mosseri pointed out that while the creative community feels the impact most acutely, the resulting pushback is not slowing down. He observed an escalating wave of anxiety, frustration, and outright anger regarding the technology's trajectory, stating that the public reaction is poised to become significantly more contentious.

Growing Friction with Creative Communities

Mosseri’s comments arrived while he was discussing new platform features, including Instagram's support for widescreen and long-form video formats. Yet the admission regarding AI highlights an awkward reality for major social platforms. Parent company Meta has invested billions into generative AI infrastructure, integrating AI assistants and creative tools directly into feeds used daily by artists, filmmakers, and independent creators.

For those working in creative disciplines, generative models often represent immediate risks to their livelihoods, copyright ownership, and creative autonomy. While tech platforms promote these systems as productivity enhancers, many creators view them as unvetted scrapers of human labor designed to automate artistic work.

By conceding that some of the anger directed at the industry is justified, Mosseri offered a rare candid appraisal from inside Meta's leadership. The challenge for platforms like Instagram will be managing that growing resentment while continuing to roll out the very technologies causing it.
